INSTRUMENTAL LABS (9-10 AM)
Brass/Woodwinds Lab
Students will go through numerous workshops on breathing, warm-ups, sight-reading, improvisation, and more.
Guitar/Bass Lab
Students will explore many genres including rock, blues, funk, and more. The focus will be on chords and rhythmic comping.
Keyboard Lab
Students will learn and work on chords, improvisation, and rhythmic comping. Also focusing on scales and complex rhythms.
Drum/Percussion Lab
Students will learn and work on rudiments as well as new grooves using the drum kit. The focus will be on rhythm and improvisation.
MUSIC THEORY LABS (10-11 AM)
Students will experience all theory labs
Improvisation/Ear Training/Rhythm
Students will learn and study jazz improvisation techniques. Focusing on blues scales, chord structures, and song form. Students will practice ear training skills by using intervals and scales. Students will study and learn how to play complex rhythms as well as learn how to apply them to improvisation.
ENSEMBLES (11:30-1 PM)
Beginner Jazz Blues Combo
Students will study and perform various styles of jazz (focusing on blues) with a specific emphasis on rhythms, articulation, and improvisation. Designed for students entering grades 5 - 6.
Intermediate Jazz Combo
Students will study and perform jazz charts with more complex melodies. Students will explore improvisation beyond the blues scale and chord progression. Designed for students entering grades 7-9
Advanced Jazz Combo
Students will study and perform advanced jazz charts focusing on theory and structure in improvisation. Students will learn various scales and modes that they can apply to their playing. Designed for students entering grades 10-12.
